What Kids See

March 31, 2011

Kids are experts at turning lemons (like chores) into lemonade (like converting a broom into a magic wand that flees through the air instead of sweeping up dirt as was originally asked of them). Outwardly I scold them for not being able to stay on task; inwardly I applaud them for their creative perspective. Oh to be a kid again.

It’s not just sour ol’ chores that they are adept at turning into sweet ol’ fun. The real estate on our fridge door for memos and to-do lists has been taken over by a theatrical stage of plastic puppets whose backs conveniently stick to the wall. These plays showcase an endless amount of imagination and entertainment. Who wants a to-do to do anyway?!

With so many characters poised for action I thought I’d step things up a bit by giving them a voice and added ‘Say It Bubbles’ to the mix. To me it was plainly obvious that the purpose of the speech bubble interface was to write words down on them. What the kids saw instead was a family of penguins, a shark with a fin, and people who have very pointy noses.
