Accidentally Encaustic

May 6, 2011

Encaustic is painting with beeswax that has been tinted with oil paint. The process entails building a series of layers and blending them together with a high heat source. The finished effect reminds me of layered cake – it looks as rich as real cake tastes.

This is my first kick at the encaustic painting can. I did a workshop with Supria Karmakar last year and found the medium to be unpredictable but forgiving, which happens to be my two favorite qualities in an art medium. Supria did a great job encouraging novices like me to fear not and venture forth. Even though the bulk of my results were accidental I still found them to be pleasing 99% of the time. With odds like that I’ll definitely be coming back for more.
